about

On the 31st of January 2017 I put out
my Boss guitar pedal set for sale on
Finn, the Norwegian equivalent
to eBay. The first pedal set I ever
bought. It consisted of various
effects like flanger, heavy metal
distortion, noise gate, compression
sustainer and chorus. All wrapped in
a silvery plastic suitcase. One guy in
Tromsø responded immediately. He
seemed like a nice guy, so we made
a deal.

One and half year later I moved to
Tromsø, to accomplish my artistic
research at ‘Kunstakademiet’, UiT The
Arctic University of Norway, which I
finalized in 2022. I remembered that
guy from Finn and got in touch,
this was Themistoklis Altintzoglou.
Later we become friends and now
finally collaborators.

One day we decided to do a common
field recording trip in the city of
Tromsø. We went to
‘Parkeringstunnelen’ or Fjellet
parking house, that is connected to
the tunnel system Langnestunnelen (1988)
and Sentrumstangenten (1999)
that perforate the Tromsø Island.

The parking house was established in
2000 and can host more than 900 cars.
One of the spaces can also serve as
emergency shelter for the whole
population of Tromsø.

When entering the location, you can
hear the sounds of distant cars
driving through the tunnels. Vehicles
parked in lines. In the roof there
was a shimmering blue light. Dark
corners where imaginary monsters
may hide. The voice of the mountain
whispering its song of lamentation.
I have been passing its entrance many
times and this time it sucked me in.

Together we were individually
exploring the acoustics, vibration
and the psychogeography of the
tunnels. With audio recorders,
different microphones and
smartphones we were mapping the
site both visual and sonically. Later
we shared what we had collected,
so we could re-compose and process
the material.

The collected footage went through
several stages of fermentation and
ended up as four separate tracks.
Three pieces by Alexander Rishaug
And one long track by
Themistoklis Altintzoglou.

Rishaug’s recordings where made
using a Tascam DR-44 WL handheld
recorder for ambient sounds and a
Sound Devices MixPre-6 with LOM
Geofón for vibrations and resonance
recordings. The sounds where
re-worked with Ableton, using eq and
granular synthesis.

Θ (pronounced as "theta") is
Themistoklis Altintzoglou. These
recordings were made using a zoom
h6 field recorder and a soma ether v2
electromagnetic anti-radio receiver.
Post processing was limited to
arrangement and volume balancing.
